Both total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are deemed to be highly successful and cost-effective procedures for relieving pain and improving function. However, some studies have reported better pain relief and functional improvement after THA (Int J Technol Assess Health Care. 1997 Fall;13[4]:575-88, and J Arthroplasty. 1995 Dec;10[6]:742-7). It is certainly possible that various differences between the patient populations are responsible for some of these results. With this in mind, Choi et al. compared THA and TKA groups and accounted for possible confounding variables in terms of whether there are any differences in clinical outcomes between these procedures.
